Not autistic, it's basically the opposite of what I used to do. I'd take a scene from a book or listen to a song (anything non-visual) and think about all the little details and how to translate it into a single visual image that expresses the same story.
I think my version would make for a better artist though desu, your way sounds more like a good storytelling exercise. But examining the details in art is certainly good practice for an artist, both observing technique to the storytelling already present. Just not sure how creating a new story from the same details relates to visual art.
