Is construction drawing just a complex form of cartooning? I realized that sometimes when I draw from life it feels more like I'm fusing together abstract shapes into something that eventually ends up looking like a face while when I draw construction drawings (Vilppu, Huston, etc) it feels more like I'm sculpting a three dimensional shape on a 2D plane based upon my knowledge and not based on exactly what I'm seeing, essentially like a cartoonist.

Is this the path of the painter vs the path of the animator?
