Did he actually just use the same amount of pigment over and over with more and more and MORE linseed oil?
How do you even measure something like that?

He did though.
>“Trenta, quaranta velatura” (Thirty, forty glazes), he once boasted. This is an exaggeration, surely, but one that emphasizes the importance of these thin veils of translucent paint applied layer on layer.
Analysis on his paintings shows he once repainted a face 5 times over in 5 different positions.

We cannot be sure if velatura translates perfectly to the English concept of glaze. It often refers not only to transparent and semi-transluscent layers that darken the painted area but also to a wider range of applications such as semi-opaque light layers.
Reworking is not the same as "glazes."

So to summarize
>primer then drawing
>first layer of only white
>add in greens and reds
>then grisaille
>then dead colors
>then some more red for the clothing
>a layer of scumbled white
>background glazes
>re add in white and other colors
>finally apply warmth to the flesh tones
>probably more steps from there and that's just the simplified version
That's helpful and all but how did he make it so that the fat over lean rule applied?

And even if there happens to be some instances of that many layers, we do not know enough of the context and exact definition. For example, a body done in simple modeling with the shadows glazed in, say, 3 layers and the lights modeled in 3 more, could be considered done in 4 layers or considered up to 8 if you count even the greyish layer over the thin ground.
