It's safer to trace 3d models you pose yourself or photos you shoot in the mirror.
I trace all the time, but I'm practicing to move on from it - it's much faster to draw from imagination than to find perfect reference. Drawing without tracing is pretty much required for anyone trying to make a living with their art.
