Knowing how they actually work takes some of the magic away for me. Yes it's still very impressive on a technically level.
But I remember a friend of mine saying that he thinks AI is on the verge of being at human level because they now can write stories and paint, which is absolutely not the case.

Sort of. As far as I am aware models like these just encode images into vectors and then can generate new images by taking a random vector and decoding it into an image. Which, again, is very impressive, but my problem is that it can't really "understand" what it's doing, it's just a very sophisticated monkey at a typewriter

This is true for all current AI systems, but the tech is always improving.

And after improvements happen, then the input modality becomes a problem, because text is a slow way to describe art.

Can you do this on a larger size if you use docker OP? I’m not sure I’m satisfied with how it is right now. It’s good though, however I don’t know what database it uses or how it learns exactly. Does it always keep learning with other users or does it retrain itself from zero when I input new words? I would want to train it further and more specifically for certain cases if possible.

Even if AI gets really good (which it probably will) there will still always be people who appreciate human artists. Just like how I can download an aimbot in a fps videogame and be a way better aimer than any pro who has ever lived, and yet no one will give a shit because it's just a robot aiming for me.

It would be interesting if in the future, big art sites like Deviant Art or Pixiv upright ban AI generated art because it's unfair to human artists. Either way, only time will tell.

Aren't custom brushes basically AI then? You can draw grass, trees, clouds, etc. with them. Is that unfair to those who can't draw that kind of stuff without the brush? Should that be banned because it's not purely human? Just like how the best kind of aimbot is the one that subtly helps them make their shots, but not so obvious that they're using one.

Not true. An ant doesn't even know what language is, but today we have huge NLP models with billions of parameters.

Human brain has +/- 10^15 synapses.

We are not that far off now. If number of parameters gonna double each year, we might get there under 2 decades.

Unless Penrouse, which I hope, is right and micro-tubules take some part in cognition.
AI will become very scary for us, as anything we do could be done better and cheaper by AI.

I think it's also about intent and context. Sure an AI will eventually be able to write literature or paint paintings that are on a technical level better than your favorite poet or painter, but you can't really relate to it like you can relate to something made by a human (probably).
