What kind of values based on the Background?

I'm having a hard time deciding which background colors/values I should use in relation to the values of the subject. I'm starting to lean towards white background over blackones but I am curious.

Anyone have any good tutorials or examples to use as a reference for values on white backgrounds?

It depends on what you're searching for in the composition. With white/bright bgs, you you can use lighter values and can play around with ambient occlusion to flirt with some extreme darks in cracks and small areas.

If you're going with a dark bg, your values can be much more extreme, using very dark darks to carve shadow shapes, making for a punchier picture.

What happens if I do the reverse would the contrast be too great?

Not if that's the look you're going for. If you do a dark background with dark values, the focus becomes how you play with them. What are you trying to say with the picture? In the pic you provided, using a dark bg would probably be less impactful at emphasizing the playfulness and lightheartedness of the character. as it is, it feels like the character is bathing in sunlight.

The thing with light and color is it's all relative to the surrounding. You can do a high contrast character in a dark setting, but it's going to have a far different tone to the picture than if you put it in a light setting.
