They thought it was 2 layers of muscle and theorized there could be a third. Now they know there are 3 layers. Since it goes deep into the cheek bone it was just overlooked.

This was already identified by Michelangelo. Just look at leg studies by him and you will see him indicate it, sometimes very clearly, sometimes just by a soft shadow. There are other anatomical structures that anatomists are now just discovering that Michelangelo already depicted in drawing, painting, and sculpture.

1) the way the muscles are grouped varies. Artistic anatomy is a meme, muscles aren’t that obvious.

2) not everyone has the same muscles, bones, ligaments, veins, arteries. This might be a shock to some people.

Your best bet is to continue drawing surface anatomy from real life models and draw anatomy at public dissections/exhibitions. All these instructional books are full of shit.
