After all, these studies are based on averages and putting people into nice, compartmentalized boxes that can hopefully extend to everybody. But ergodic theory shows why that's impossible. But keep in mind, the study that the article talked about was elite level musicians; hardly people who lack focus or dedication.
But, focus and willpower can indeed be trained. Mindfulness training has shown exceptional benefits for willpower and focus. And surely you can can go practicing for longer than these studies suggest.
However, I wonder if it's necessary to do so. For example, if your practice is super efficient and deliberate, maybe after 2 or 3 hours, you are heading into the realm of diminishing returns. After all, you can only absorb so much in a day. And if you do so much, you're likely not going to pick up everything as well as if you focused on certain things for just 2 to 3 hours.
