I'm not sure there are bland styles, only bland artists or bland execution at the direction of someone with no taste. They tend not to push in any particular direction or do anything exceptionally well.
Taste is feeling strongly for something. It doesn't need to be justified, it just has to be present.

Pic unrelated. It's good art. But it looks like that because it's not made with a true Japanese-ness behind it. It's not anime styled. But anime inspired. Westnime is uncanny

No it looks like that because it's made by bland and boring people most likely working under a "design by committee" system instead of being directed by someone with a strong vision and personality. Although the fact they are half-assedly aping anime on a surface level instead of doing something original and interesting is direct cause and effect.

if it's an amalgamation of currently popular styles, rather than being informed by the character of the artist. most clearly observable in anime, as it has the most unified look of any medium

the writing of Castevania makes me cringe too hard. There's no depth to any of the characters. It's all based on the cocky/funny archetype with 0 room for growth or nuance. It's like they asked a group of 12 year old what's funny and they all started saying "fuck"

Avatar have good writing at first but end up kid-friendly route. Also Every cartoon in the West use CIA psy op expressions so they look crazier compare to Japanese anime which usually on point.
