It's gouache, mixed with some other stuff.

As far as I know, painting with gouache and poster colors is essentially the same. Same techniques and everything.

I've been tempted to pick up some poster colors, but they're only available as an import, so I went with gouache since it's just more readily available in America.

Likewise. I grabbed a set of 12 Sakura poster colors off Amazon to test out. I suspect they may be lower quality compared to Nicker (although I thought I read somewhere that poster colors aren't pro-grade/archival anyway because they are meant to be scanned) and I worry a bit that working with a lower quality product starting out may be more challenging and off-putting. That said, I also wanted to force myself into working with a limited number of colors and doing more mixing.
