With a full piece you have the potential of sunk cost issues that don't really exist with sketches, as well as taking lazy shortcuts because it's a lot of work.
That being said it's mostly what I do and it's something you can't really skip in the learning process. I constantly see tards here posting 15 minute sketches bitching that they look like shit. But full pieces will push you to try and correct your mistakes, which is crucial for the learning process.
