I've mapped half my keyboard to brush categories (pencils, pens, markers, textures, oils, grit, airbrushes, blenders, etc) so I can change between them easily, but some of those (like the oils) have lots of brushes, so I'm opening and closing the brush window all the time in csp with my left hand comfortably around the lower left corner of the keyboard (I've mapped the brush window to N, which my thumb finds without looking). Taking my hand off to reach the esc key in Krita makes me mad in a few minutes and is enough to make a huge difference in productivity and flow.
On a big screen you can keep things visible all the time. I like tablets and hiding everything most of the time.
