Even outside of marketing you're just competing against far more. Everyone in my small sphere might love my art, but when it gets compared to the best of the best everywhere in the world, it quickly becomes mediocre at best.
Imo that's the biggest reason shits hard. Because looking at myself I have to compare myself to the best rather than a close by rival. There's no more "good enough" you have to be great because in your mind and the minds of everyone else, master tier art work is a 5 second Google search away
