The shadows are a bit too dull (black);perhaps because of the camera.
You could still refine your understanding of the form; copying a polished Bargue or high-quality academical drawings might help. Don't bother with color;this is purely a matter of value/form here;even drawing a grid instead of rendering might be good enough.
Once you perfectly understand the form, you'll be able to simplifying it with more elegance/confidence.

That fish partially in the shadow (the low one), you could tone done the shadow part a bit more, it's currently popping as if it was in light.
He's a bit of a your-grandma-teacher kind, but he has quite a few valid essential points;he's been at an easel/in front of a class for decades.
