does anybody even do that? I mean everyone does draw from imagination but I see this redraw reference from memory advice somewhat often and I never see any examples.

It's all about mileage. There are no books that will teach you how to draw from memory.
You might want to learn perspective, which is the fundamental that will most help you when trying to create your own scenes/poses.
