Is the "industry" actually as competitive as people say or are most the of people trying to get these art jobs just under skilled and not in the right mindset? I assume a fuck ton of people are sending in their portfolios but how many GOOD artists are sending in portfolios?

Do I need to "specialize" or can I aim to be somewhat versatile and be able to do anything? I know there different kinds of concept artists for different assets but I kind of don't want to find myself trapped in one field in the future.

Well, if you want to come off as someone who can do anything, the obvious answer is to have a porfolio with a bit of everything in it, but also many pieces of heavy perspective drawings of interiors, industrial design, vehicles and environments. Stuff like what you'd see in Scott Robertson's how to draw book. If you can do that well, most clients will just assume that you can do anything else at least competently, because of how much more difficult it it compared to any other jobs. That will also open you the most doors because almost everyone hates doing this kind of work and it has the least competition.

this is shit advice, you need to specify. you need to shop around at studios, find one you'd wanna work for and tailor your works to their stuff.

There are lots of good artists sending in portfolios, lots of shit ones too. You need to network more, try to make friends with someone working in the industry and utilize their connections. You need to do good work, deliver on time, and be a likeable person. By the way, you post character art but I hope you know character stuff is for the character designer, concept art is like, vehicles and furniture and weapons and shit.

also posting for interest. how do you come up with the actual subjects to start a portfolio with? do you tailor it to a specific kind of game, do you make "mock" characters/games etc? i was thinking of starting with some book illustrations by taking already existing books and making new covers, not sure if that's a waste of time though cause I bet out of all the illustration sectors that must be the most saturated and competitive

Depends on what job you want in the industry too. For example, character design is so over saturated that only the best artists get the job and there are some great artists who might just be stuck doing environmental or prop design cause there isn't a high enough demand for character design and only the top 1% get those jobs.
