I feel like you need a good circle if you're the type tgat needs pressure to improve, but the good groups are probably made of friends and closed off to the public or too big filled with non-stop talking. How do you find a good circle, /ic/bros?

Maybe I'm not the best example because I feel unnaturally compelled to do art anyway but I've had the opportunity to make art friends and join art circles many times in life and I definitely felt motivated by it. It's an amazing feeling to have a group of friends I can go hang out and draw with and talk about shit we all know and relate to and challenge each other and share knowledge. I don't know if I could say it's essential to making it because I've never had the experience of not having it but I would say anyone who has the chance to do it should. You should connect with any positive community or group even if it's something marginally related or unrelated like cooking or something. It just makes life a little easier to live when you have some people to connect with.

yes but only in small numbers. i'm in a circle with three other people (and they're all better than me) and there's an energy you get despite it being over the internet to improve and want to make each other proud. on top of giving each other feedback and critique.
can backfire if you're an emotional person, at times i've felt like shit because my stuff looks like children's doodles compared to them but i try to push it out of my mind and keep going.

sounds nice, smaller is probably better. I've checked out those bigger art discords before but not what I was looking for. Not sure how to find those kind of circles online. If OP ends up making a server I'll check it out though

Do you guys actually make friends here. I wasn't here for the last one but that was a shit show. I kinda just do whatever random people suggest I do over the internet, it's worked out for me so far. Discords are bizzare and everybody wants to put a label on somebody. I wouldn't recommend it; only to look at the artwork but there are a few cool dudes I've met so it's hard to say. If you are a beginner and need help, you can add me. I draw the atelier sophie girl in the promotion thread. I won't care if you don't follow ect. It's been a new perspective on art and how it was made after speaking to artists directly on discord. But there are cliques and that makes me dislike the artwork

I'm mildly acquainted with a lot of people with a decent number of people in the animation industry, and at first it was encouraging, but as time has passed, I've noticed more and more that a lot of them are childish, emotionally stunted, and borderline toxic.

It's that repulsive mixture of arrogance and timidity that so many of them carry around with themselves. I can't stand it.

You don't need art friends to improve, but spending time with friends is always nice. Unfortunately, most /ic/ posters are too wild and either take themselves too seriously or are just weirdos in general. Just make your own server, post a link here or elsewhere, and run it with concrete goals of what kind of community you want. Users who use their technical skill or follower count or whatever else to enforce their opinions will usually kill a community. A good community is one populated by knowledgeable users who agree that everyone within the community is on the same playing field and that it's a safe space to share ideas without attacking others. So basically like the server I'm running that I'm not inviting you to.
