To me it seems like he had a look he wanted, and he just got better and better at achieving that look.
Even his current work is just an evolution of that same look, only this time he cut back on the detail and went further with the shortcuts. The result is uglier, but it probably takes waaaay less time to draw (and it has to, since his current work is weekly whereas AD and Claymore were monthly).
Also, I don't think he lacked fundamental knowledge at all, it's just that comic art is a different beast from illustrations. You have to achieve a distinct, stylish and attractive look on a deadline while also having to worry about writing and storyboarding the work, which is especially difficult for a gag manga like AD.
Pic related. Though the eyes are slightly off, it's clearly a different look to the chapter that it precedes, which indicates that the look of the chapter was a conscious decision.
