hello , does anyone know a good waterproof ink that can be used in fountain pens ?
I've been using Noodlers waterproof black but it still smudges when I go over it lightly with watercolor paints

tldr: seeking an ink that I can watercolor paint over

Hum, any Indian ink should do. I've never had issues with picrel; I've also never been too picky on ink qualities, and often relies on microns.

Also Staedler has some ink for its "rechargeable fineliners" that I use with a pentel brush pen. Again, no smudging issues.

I've been experimenting with waterproof black + watercolor and have tried most of them.

In most cases the smudging happens because the ink is piled on top of the paper and the top layer isn't contacting the fibers so it doesn't get to bind. You can get around this by using a drier pen, diluting the ink, or mixing the ink so that it penetrates more into the paper. There are tricks that sometimes work (using an eraser, pressing a clean sheet of paper on the drawing - try to remove the "loose" top layer of ink) but I found they never fully solve the problem.

Noodlers Black is the shittiest permanent black, it takes 3x longer to dry than it should and isn't particularly waterproof. R&S SketchInk Lotte is the best IMO but most of the nanopigment inks feel pretty similar.

Noodlers Lexington Grey is the secret to eliminating smudging. It is a cellulose dye ink that soaks into paper so fast that most nibs will write a size wider. It is a very dark grey and the increased flow offsets the dilution so your blacks stay the same.

Mix 50-70% SketchInk with 10-50% Lexington and fill the balance with water, thats about as good as you can get. Lexington is also possibly the fastest drying ink in existance so you end up with ink that behaves extremely well.

Thank you for the information, I'm gonna buy a bottle of lexington and look into R&S SketchInk Lotte
Maybe my issue is my paper choice, I'm just using normal sketchbook with 60lb paper. What kind of paper would be more recommended in this situation?

you're supposed to let it dry for about a day before it sets. fountain pen ink isn't supposed to be able to be painted over right away

The problem is cleaning your fountain pen is so people prefer dip pen when using waterproof ink.

your best bet is doing tests on the paper you have, every paper is different. in general though if you want fast iteration time then it's hard to beat india ink or technical pen ink (a la tech pens or brush pens) in my experience.

I was thinking of buying a Tsbwi but they have cracking problems and the pilot prera should be cheaper. How are the Penbbs fountain pens?

Noodler's waterproof black IS waterproof, but you need to let it dry for a deceptively long time. If there's even the tiniest bit of water in the pigment while you go over it it'll smudge but once it's really truly dry it's good to go.
