Your thoughts on Hyper realistic pencil drawings?

I dont quite get the appeal, I recognize the craftsmanship required for something to look like that but why would you spent hours and hours, sometimes weeks, creating a drawing that looks like a photo when you already have the skill level to do something creative and stimulating. Are these the kind of people that enjoy solving a 20k pieces jigsaw puzzle?

It gets many upvotes on social media but nobody really cares and you cant make money off it.

Youll get comments like "Wow this is so impressive I hope you become a famous artist" but the same people woudnt buy your stuff or even hang it on their wall or do anything with it.

The only people who I respect are the ones who can create a photorealistic photo from imagination.
99% just copy the reference and they use a fucking grind.

Requires the highest amount of skill to pull off well. Any failure to put down a correct value makes the drawing look off.
They're like value studies taken to the extreme.

There was a time when there was value in being able to exactly reproduce a photo with a pencil but since then we have advanced photography and copying/scanning technology to the point where it's useless outside of impressing people on social media. If you're going to exactly copy a photo why not just take a picture or copy it on to your computer?

This is the problem with hyperrealism, it's not too interesting outside of having the technical skill to exactly replicate all the values needed to copy a picture and if you wanted to copy a picture you could have just photographed or scanned it.

Now if you can somehow combine it with art fundes to draw something entirely new from imagination that's when it gets amazing.

Also they don't necessarily do a literal 1:1 copy of everything, if they're good they add tiny flairs here and there to make things look more lifelike and have soul. If you take a picture in front of a mirror, it'd probably look like shit if you blew it up and put it in a frame. Their job is to make sure you get the best possible portrait even if they take minor creative liberties and draw attention to certain features.

Hyper realism is close to 1:1 but it's not exact.

Eh, it's significantly harder to do from life reference because a photo already compresses the values and you can just go from section to section slowly grinding until the value is the same as in the reference next to you

This isn't supposed to appeal to artist, but to non artists.
Personally, i respect the grind but it is completely devoid of any artistic value and creativity if you just replicate a reference or draw something for the sole and only purpose of being photorealistic.
Also, yes, it's the same as doing a jigsaw puzzle.
Some people just enjoy doing such things.

The guy said in the video that it took him two months to finish it, which you can safely assume he was drawing every day to two days, not more than two hours max, but he wasn't really burning himself out with it by drawing relentlessly for two months.

In the end, photorealism, is very good as practice, because it teaches you values and value control.
Making it your main thing? Only if you enjoy hours of grind and accept
>"you're so talented" comments
as payment.

I think it deserves the same kind of recognition as someone who completes a 10,000 piece jigsaw. The answer is already there, there is zero creativity involved it just takes an enormous amount of time. I dont think they habe any creative value when it's copied 1 for 1 from a photo

The fuck are you talking about? Realists are always the top favorites of the public.

Drawing peoples pets or relatives in a realist style is always going to make more money that drawing pets or relatives in a cartoon or anime style.

The main reason people run down realism? They can't do it. They want to draw shitty same-face anime faces and they get all pissy when they don't make the same money drawing that way that a realistic artist makes

I don’t really see what they can offer besides building muscle memory for things like value. I used to do them, but realized I wasn’t learning from them, but rather I was just mindlessly copying shapes. They are also pretty easy to get good at. You can pretty much master them in like a year as long as you at least attempt to learn values.

I actually can, throughout highschool i fell for the photocopy meme because it got me praise from everyone, won me some prizes and my art teachers encouraged it. But i never felt satisfied, i wasnt creatively fulfilled being a xerox machine. I realized I couldnt draw for shit from imagination and switched paths. I'm still trying to make up for lost time, i wish id never been encouraged to do it, all it taught me was line control. I can draw a perfect circle but my visual library is badly stunted.

They're only good at copying but if you let them draw people from real life or create something from imagination, chances are they will either produce something that has the quality of a /beg/ or just give up halfwaybecause they didn't acquire basic skills like constructive drawing, shading, simple perspective, etc. etc

They'll buy graphite drawings but they're often put off by the price and the time required to deliver a finished piece. When you explain that it's labor intensive and you're charging by the square inch, people tend to understand and then proceed to not commission you.

Paintings are much easier to do and sell for more, unfortunately.
