What is the name of this visual genre? It reminds me of vaporwave but it's more classic. In the 2000s there used to be lots of things with this look. There ought to be a name.

I can sort of see that in the OP pic but I see a lot of that stuff nowadays as well. I don't see how it relates to the UI window, which to me just looks like it tries to be minimalist, but not as extremely as current UI designs.

I think what you're getting at is something that's too young to really be defined. I know what you're looking for but there isn't a name for it yet. It's like the adolescence of computer graphics in media. I'm probably aging myself but when I started messing with computers I was low teens and I thought gradients and overly complicated shapes to denote one shape was cool. Like the infinity pipes screensaver on windows or the original ps3. Blending real life photos with crude computer graphics, high contrast and what people thought the future and it's opulence would look like in the 2000s. The very opposite of today's more minimalist and corporate friendly approach to design. Adowave? Juventech? Idk what you would call it but I'm curious to find out if there is a term as well. One day there will be people that will try to recreate that moment in time and they're gonna need this term.

Most of what I see posted here just looks like vapourwave to me. Which is different from synthwave/retrowave btw, because some people confuse those terms. Vapourwave is lampooning of cheesy 90s and early 00s CG aesthetics. Retrowave is 80s and looks like what you just posted.

Pic I posted is def retrowave. It's hard to further describe the aesthetic but I know and op knows it's not either of those genres. There's a distinct feeling that rises from it. It's colder, not as inviting, empty yet exclusive. It's nostalgia of times that were beginning to get complicated whereas retrowave is nostalgia of times that were simpler, more analog and vaporwave is nostalgia of what we wish we had.

It's exclusionary and a bit intimidating. It's also the opposite today's styles, which are all about being inclusive and appealing to the masses (think of those cartoons with long legs and random colors in landing pages).

Love the retrowave image by the way, I wish websites looked mysterious like that.
