and to me the soul is
the artist wanting to show something
sometimes its great philosophical messages or shit like that, and thats considered 'high art'
but sometimes it's just a guy going, huh I thought it would be cool to have this character fighting in this pose, and they try their best to draw it. Not because they want to make money off of it (not that profiting makes something not soulful) but rather because rather than keep that cool image to themselves they try and make something from it.
Thats why some art has masterful fundamental and technological skills, the artist is very skilled, but the piece is boring. It's something you don't really care for, because there was no passion behind it. Stuff like that.
It's a mix of finding that technical skill, and that passion (or soul)
To me thats good art, or at least what I like.
