Does anyone know how the Arcane show/anime/animation was made? Was it blender with a paint over for each frame or something else for the digital paint style?

They just painted the models themselves and I doubt they would've used blender.

They animated like every normal 3d animation studio and instead of texturing with 3d they handpainted every 3d model, used 2 backrounds sometimes and Ive heard they developed a cell shading filter on top so the 3d is even less noticable.

they spent 6 years making 9 episodes. a lot of it is literally handpainted with the models more as a guide than anything.

don't expect to see anything like it ever again. it's the redline of western shows.

I don't really like how it looks.
It looks like Dishonored cutscenes but they had a slightly higher animation budget for adding small details of overlap and secondary action.
The hand painted textures are just normal 3d textures so when the model moves the same brush stroke from the front is suddenly there from a sideview and looks video gamey as fuck.
The way people described it I was expecting hand painted frames rotoscoped over 3d which is not at all what they did (maybe for the sfx which seem to be 2d similar to spiderman into the spiderverse)

it is most definetely not made that way.

you people here have never seen a painted texture on a model ?

but now-a-days they can literally paint over the 3d model like you would paint a miniature

This has been a feature in 3d softwares for like 15 years
People knows shit about DRAWING on /ic/, imagine teaching them about 3d, their mind would implode pal

They did not exactly spend 6 years making 9 episodes. They probably spent years just figuring out what to even do. The studio had just 20 people when the project first began. Season 2 is already slated to come out on "Not 2022" (so 2023 most likely)

6 years probably includes multiple test pilots with different styles that they didn't end up liking. I bet when they saw into the spiderverse they got the confidence to just go for the handpainted look.

You're telling me for the past 15 years Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Paramound, WB etc have always had an easy tool to make their animations look beautifully artistic and like a painting in motion, but chose to make it look like generic shit instead?

But that's exactly what 3D movies look like. It got the exact same generic, super smooth digital 3D render look you'd see in some Blizzard or Square cinematic. Except video game companies at least improved over the last 15 years with their prerendered cutscenes whereis western 3d animation had been completely stagnant.

I kinda agree. That's why into the spider verse even happened. They didn't want to just make a generic pixar movie.
But also there's still parts of arcane and (spider-verse) that look a bit off when they show from front to side and you can see some of the lighting on their face is an unchanging texture.
You have to just ignore it and hope the audience is so invested they also ignore it.
