I think you're in that phase where you're not listening to your eye, you're drawing symbols. Maybe contour drawing would be a good exercise for that. I think your values come out a little light, try to rough out your values before getting hung up on the textures and details. I see in the top that you're practicing shading primitive shapes, keep it up. Just keep grinding at observation. Maybe try to add a shadow on the floor plane too, would help the bird feel like he has a presence.
