>>5766384You actually do have the luxury of copying real life, it's called drawing.
>>5768782>>5766336realism is a genre, even in literature. It's only in art where people get uppity about how you didn't embellish something they wanted to see enough. It's only when your technical skills are better than theirs that you have a leg to stand on, though, so every artist is browbeaten into using 'gesture' (an abstraction that does not exist in real life) to make their poses more expressive before they gain those skills, then they go on to harass the next generation into using 'gesture' to do the same thing. Then you get hipsters like
>>5766671 claiming that their stylistic choice is necessary to 'communicate their feelings' and that anyone who doesn't want to make gestural, flowing poses is coping.
>>5766682100% correct. The two are conflated when critique is given, and people think the fix to their shitty awkwardly posed OC is 'gesture', when in reality it could be angle, perspective, construction, or any other technical execution they lack the skill for. Then they think 'wow yeah looks good now' and proceed to never break the rule of gesture, no matter what other artistic 'rules' they get good enough to break.
