Its when Blender released their unified principled shader that has all the possible material properties in one and BG is goes over each basically explaining everything there is to know about the materials.

I tend to break things down from the base colour with simple value then add reflections and punch the core out. Only starting to learn about fensel now. If I'm doing something pearl I deepen the core and imagine what is facing the view point and make that the area of pearl. picrel playing with paint colouring over a meh 2d sketch. I use Scott Robertson method of 2d rendering btw, but will echo the 3d guys have a lot of good light understanding.
