What you often get is zoomers using a contemporary artstyle based off steven universe and she-ra and just throwing a VHS filter over it and calling it a day. They fail to realize that these things aren't what made 80s and 90s anime feel distinct, it was just something adjacent to those shows since they were made while CRT TVs and VHS were a thing.
The artists who bank off anime nostalgia and get the farthest are the ones that look at print magazines and animation cels since and aren't spending their time being obsessed with sailor moon gifs they found off pinterest and tumblr and shitty VHS reddit filters.
