Is simplification the biggest secret skill?

I mean, anyone can trace a photo.
It takes serious skill to produce the same effect using simpler shapes.

If you consider pic related your goal, then yes.

Otherwise, simplification is just one of the many tools necessary for achieving a good picture.
I would say the most important skill to have is SOUL. It's not a skill, I know, but having the care and attention to making sure your picture looks expressive and welcoming is what defines whether or not people will enjoy it, regardless of skill level.

That's less simplification and more reduction, since you aren't reducing the shapes to a point where you can still convey the overall general silhouette as much as changing them to more abstract shapes, like slightly bent cylinders for legs.
