Does you writing have to be objectively good for making your comics work? Pic related was one of the most popular anime/manga of the early 2010s (?) and I've never seen anyone praising Mashima for his writing and characters in my whole life. There are also anime that become popular despite the overall writing being kinda bad by objective standards like Darling in the Franxx or Code Geass. Hell, Bastard!! is one of the most enternaining manga I've ever read in general and I've seen plenty of people calling the writing dumb. Even Hokuto No Ken has basic as shit writing and a monster of the week formula yet it's iconic and considered a classic.

TL;DR Is being entertaining overall more important than having good writing?
