Get dorian iten's and sam nielsans course. Or understand how basic lighting,reflection and refraction works. Study simple matt and glossy objects than branch onto other materials. Do still life and stuff.

A texture is a pattern of value. How hard or soft is the texture? How dense? What about it's luster? All that comes into play.
