My consensus is yes, it does work, but there's drawbacks to consider.
Your mind will be more focused at the task at hand, you'll make smarter design decisions, more clear thought out choices in all areas really.
But if you have any kind of ADD, it's incredibly hard to get started like that, and much less so maintain drawing.
I usually try to limit the music I listen to when I'm in the opening stages of my drawings, when I need to do the most thinking. After posing is done and I'm into sketching, I can listen to music that isn't too lyric heavy, or I can tune the lyrics out of.
But when I'm linearting or shading, I can settle down with a podcast or audiobook because that's mindless work anyhow.
