You don't have the skill to render forced/intense expressions, simple as that.
First of all, you need to either take a really good ref (lit like your scene) or be really good at facial anatomy.
Second, don't try to render all the folds and forms of the expression, stick to major landmarks first
(eyebrows, nose placement, corners of the mouth)
Third you need to be mega conservative with your value range for these skin folds
Picrel is the illustration i'm working on right now.
I wanted to make her face even more scrunched up but i failed to push the expression further while keeping her cute.
Point is : If the expression looks off, bring it back, simplify it.
If you want to make appealing art, you are need to synthetize your faces a lot more.
If it looks off, don't try to render it more, go back and change your shapes.
