>>5756041This is a really good analysis and reflects a lot of my thoughts initially. I really liked the David Finch article because of the no-nonsense clarity of what you're exactly supposed to do, step by step, which is why I post is so much, but it is definitely lacking. Specifically, he doesn't tell you how to render, which I found gave me a huge boost in understanding form, even in line-drawing. Like, when you render half-tones, you're basically doing advanced planar analysis, trying to understand the angle and shape of every single facet on the surface, turning the form in a realistic way. Without that, you're just regurgitating shapes from your memory bank, and you won't have a true understanding of drawing.
I wish the Vilppu Drawing Manual were still in print, because that's what I'd shill if I really wanted to give people the best answer to how to draw. That'll tell you pretty much how to learn everything, except composition. But, the David Finch article is a good enough starting point for people to branch off and go in their own direction
