I personally know and went to school with an artist who does everything opposite to the common advice given to people who want to build a large following (post regularly, consistency, make comments, etc.) And has over 50k followers on his Instagram and Twitter. How? His brother is online famous and drops their name into his posts every now and then.
For background: This artist and I both started our pages at the same time to post our classwork. I had no idea about his brother until recently. We were growing at about the same rate until we graduated. That's when his brother started tagging him in stuff. His follower count exploded when another online famous artist (who is a friend of his brother commented on their image.) Since then the algorithm dumped a ton of traffic onto his profile despite the fact that he post only twice a month at most and it's random drawings.
Since witnessing this I have stopped believing in any growth strategies or other tips people share online. The only way to get a huge following is to know or pay an influencer who can boost your profile.
