Cartoons and critique

How does one go about critically analyzing and critiquing cartoons? Unlike stuff anime or actual realistic drawings of figures or landscapes or architecture, cartoons are so heavily abstracted that there's seldom any point to redlining them, and the perspective is less about being correct and more about being believable enough and conveying the point of the image
Clearly, though, there's good cartoon art and bad cartoon art and stuff in between, and it ultimately comes down to appeal I think; as such, how does one judge appeal in a critical manner? Gesture? Shape language? Colour?
