If you import files and the original files get a copyright strike, yours imported copies will be gone. If you upload files and someone else imports them and shares his files, and he gets a copyright strike, your original files will be gone too.
This is because when you import files on Mega, you're not making a new copy on their servers. It's just creating a new link to the same files. It's how Mega saves disk space.
Mega is completely based on links, they don't know what files are on their servers because they're encrypted, and they don't know which files belong to which account. If you upload files and create links for them, but they get leaked on a public forum (like 4chan), you can actually destroy those links and create new ones and protect your files that way.
