I think most people who haven't trained their eye a bit can't tell the difference between styles of artwork. When they see big eyes with a pointy chin they will think it's anime, and in their brain they will fill in the rest of the details with "generic" anime style features. This mashed up image is what they remember, and because they've done this with every other anime style they've seen, they will start to think it all looks the same
