It can stain the paper, it comes out of the paper too easily, thus complicating proper value building, it doesn't come easily to a sharp tip for fine details.
I know this is a common argument, but I've yet to be convinced. An advantage would be that, for people too used to using graphite finely, that it forces to think more broadly, but doing oil monochromes with a big brush seems better.
I would love to be proven wrong on that, thus why I'm going to try again to deepen my charcoal skills, but I would appreciate some counter-arguments, maybe I'm doing it wrong somehow?
For instance, I was thinking perhaps that I should cope with the small potential stain, thus lowering the highest potential value of the paper?
