I don’t have aphantasia, but I literally don’t imagine anything when I draw. I just choose not to, because I don’t have to. Everything I draw without reference is just muscle memory, if I get stuck i just have to…pull up a reference. Who the hell uses their imagination as a reference? It’s really inaccurate. How many of you guys actually have an image in your mind when you’re drawing?

I remember when I was 12 and wouldn’t use references, only used what I saw in my head and got frustrated when it didn’t look the way it was supposed to. Yeah, now I wish I couldn’t generate anime girls in my head and actually forced myself to study how breasts attached to the shoulders, the shape of the head, and the ratio of the body parts in relation to each other.

I would even say imagination is a curse unless it’s superhumanly accurate. Stop using your imaginations, and build up experience instead.
