The idea was that, for a *beginner*, it's much better to spend one's time developing taste, vision, eye/hand/arm coordination, composition, etc. than drilling anatomy.
Most of the masters also started their studies by doing master copies, which, from experience, is much more enlightening than anatomy for a /beg/.
I think anatomy is more of an intermediate/advanced subject. A little bit at first can't hurt, like identifying the big volumes with major muscles, but too much of it can be distracting from more important matters.
