Canvas size and Aspect ratio?

How do I know what Canvas size/aspect ratio to work in?
I know Instagram allows 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio's but curious to know everyone's thoughts.
like do artists typically use canvas sizes that don't crop on social media?

If you're doing portraits or pinup coomer stuff then you can't go wrong with 4:5 but you should be thinking about what works best for the composition before trying to squeeze shit into a social media mold. Your art isn't going to flop on social media just because it's 100 vertical pixels short of the ideal aspect ratio to be viewed on a phone app.

I see, so if you're doing landscapes for example, would it make sense to just stick with the 16:9 and then figure out the composition with a thumbnail with that first?

but then again, I see a lot of artist just not give a fuck and do some really stretched out canvases for charater sheets, and it doesn't make sense to me so idk.

Is 100% wrong and a moron for suggesting that all printed work is 2:3. There is a huge variety of print sizes & ratios beyond 2:3.
