I suppose building up your skills using centuries old techniques that have helped shape generations after generations of artist all over the world, well, is a relatively safe choice ;-)
Just, don't be 100% mindless when you copy, don't be a printer! Try to understand the original artist's process, thinking, feelings, etc.
Also, obviously, the better your models, the better your work.
