Art history books that go through the centuries are shit because the premodern past becomes simplified and half of the book is modern art only because of how much try hard artists there were coming up with minor styles and just having more documentation.

Wikipedia is good enough for a quick overview in most stuff. If you want to go balls deep in a specific topic, then hit the books.

The story of art by Ernst Gombrich. It sums up pretty much everything from prehistoric times to the mid XXth century. That's the book they reccomend during art studies.
