your are half right, in that i believe you should always accept what lines you lay down, because either you want them looking crisp for linework or you fuck up, but should still strive for it to look nice and there is self expression in working around a mistake.
however, i have found an eraser is less for removing mistakes and more for adjusting value.
you should treat pencils less like pens and more like brushes, and work up tone , and use the eraser to get rid of foundation lines or adjust tonal value.
