Adopt a rigid process for working through the stages of the painting from an instructor or painter.
You don't have to stick to the process forever but it helps to break it down to learn it.
Gouache tiling is similar to a popular digital process. You can see in pic related from stage 5 to 6 it goes from all hard edges to a mixture of purposefully softened edges and edges that were left hard.
