Would you need to seal cardboard before painting on it?

Obviously you would gesso it, but would you have to apply a sealer like Golden GAC-100 before you prime it? Is it different between oil, acrylics, or pastels? Am I fine just adding one or two coats of gesso without a sealer?

When in doubt, try acrylic matte medium.
Pic related. Top is thin card like you get in a cereal box, bottom is heavier duty shipping box stuff. Gave them 2 quick layers of matte medium and just grabbed the nearest tubes. Top has acrylic paints bottom has oil.
Acrylic and oil both adhere perfectly to matte medium, gouache does too but it behaves a little differently. It caused slight buckling on the thin card but the heavier stuff stayed perfect. Oil painting over acrylic matte medium on the illustration board is a method i learned from james gurney (not personally obviously), and it works on pretty much any surface.

By gesso I assume you mean the acrylic ground. It is quite absorbent so the impurities could in theory discolor if not protected by a layer of less absorbent seal/size. Supports have water soluble impurities that could migrate outwards, especially something like cardboard. The size also decreases the absorbency of the ground on top of it.
If you are lookng for something that maintains longevity in some way cardboard is probably not the best support. Egg tempera does not have the same flexibility that oil does, and cardboard will warp through moisture changes.
