A common critique of DBZ is that it's "simple" and "violent", but that's exactly why it works. The shonens that followed (barring HxH) complexified what made Dragon ball work too much.
It ended being juvenile instead of inspiring. (Perhaps One piece is an exception but I haven't read it)
