Despite the distinction being in the format, there is a bias for graphic novels being more "mature" and "sophisticated" than comic books, which are for kids and manchildren. It's really all semantics that creators used with publishers to convince the publishers to put out their works, that they weren't low-brow comics, but ~*graphic novels*~, and therefore something of merit. Publishers pitched the same to buyers, and there went the train.
