Is the concept art and illustration culture dead? I feel like it peaked in 2015. Now we're spiraling and hitting turbulence. I've seen people in the industry becoming inactive online, people getting canceled for some shit lol. What happened? Everyone had a massive online presence.

It was SOUL. NOw everything is soulless. Is this a fair accusation? What is really trending now, bros? I've been out of the loop for a few years.

Artist now have a direct line to potential customers there's little need to go through the incestuous industry to make a living. To make it on the internet you just have to be exceptional, draw the normalfags want to see, and market you to the audience that are willing to pay for your shit.

Ill try to describe how it was with a list.

1.every post you made would be seen because of the algorithms( back then). it was a great time for anyone who was already good. this is how people got internet fame.

2.if you drew harry potter tumblr art back then. you were instantly famous.

3. concept art was insanely popular. all you needed was a one point perspective and stick man and you were immediately pro.

4.youtube channels were very active. artists were doing paint overs. answering questions in the comments. and talking about their photoshop techniques

5. people werent photobashing. it was all painted. no 3d shortcuts yet.

6. everyone was trying to get good. there was a lot of competition. the standard was constantly being raised. Noah Bradley was popular. thats all you heard back then lmao.

7. deviant art was a good place to post your art and talk to people. so many lamas.

this is a shitty list.

this is the natural evolution of that list though

1. people got internet fame and that's all their followers care to see now

2. fandom art over technical art pushed those who were fundamentally good to the bottom of the stack

3. once people learned the basics that were more readily accessible than ever before, that wasn't special anymore

4. eventually those channels realized they had a business on their hands and monetized it effectively

5. the efficiency of innovation made itself manifest

6. everyone still is trying to get good, idk what this means

7. the six prior bullet points all cascaded down the slope to form the churning mass that is "art social media" today, and the comradery of smaller communities was inevitably lost to the sounds of the ruthless machine that is a likes-driven society. it'll swing back around in a few years, don't worry.

back in 2005-2008 ish there were forums where the best digital artists of the day like Craig Mullins posted free critique to anyone who asked for it.
Nobody was paywalling information, resources, tutoring, etc.
Everyone helped eachother

And then even into /ic/'s early years people offered good critique, there were study threads making up most of the board

But now it seems there's nothing... though it's more than just art I argue.
A few of my other hobbies are in a similar predicament.
/fit/ used to have threads about actually lifting, eating, etc all the time and now I rarely see them.
everyone just bitches about memes and politics today

I think there is a surplus of decent illustrators on social media. There are a lot of skilled people out there currently sitting in hundreds of thousands of followers each one with a particular art style.
I think there is just too much talent, and to be able to make a breakthrough and become a big name nowadays is ridiculously hard. Also I think there is so much you can do with 2D stuff.

I don't know but I feel like if this metaverse thing really becomes a thing (in the next decade or so), 3d models will become the real deal and so inmersive "experiences" and illustrators will become obsolete.

Illustrators are in the entertainment industry, so they also compete with giants like current celebrities and influencers, videogames (its a huge market atm and is expected to grow a lot), shows, movies... So static 2D images on a screen... not looking so good in the future.

But if you know how to make good designs (something most people on here just can't make to save their lives), then the future looks good for you
