Tezuka, Nagai, Toriyama, Togashi, Inoue, Araki, Urusawa, Masashi Tanaka, Kiyohiko Azuma and of course Toriyama all have standout paneling and composition, off the top of my head. All of them are clear and easy to read, which is the primary hurdle in paneling and composing a comic.

Honestly, there's no reason to split the two. They're the same medium, and there's plenty of visual-language crossover between the two. If you want to make comics, study both sides of the pacific.

Is it recommended to at least get a significant following on any sort of social media before starting doing comics? If you're on your own and just brand fresh to the internet I doubt you would get much traction

I don't understand the question. Just start making comics/illustrations and post them on social media. You should think about what to draw depending on the platform, of course, but I don't see why you should do something else, instead.

I wouldn't use this as an example of good composition and paneling. This probably works better on a physical comic but at first I wasn't even sure the reading was right to left because the guy in the top left is the focus of the spread.

Yours is an example of how you can get away with some things if your art is good enough.
